Gateshead Council Via Tyne and Wear Community Foundation: Community Grant Chest Programme
The aims of the fund - The Community Chest Programme aims to support organisations to develop and deliver new or enhanced activities and projects addressing the key objectives of Gateshead Council's Thrive agenda and the Government's Shared Prosperity Fund. The focus of the fund is to build capacity and infrastructure in communities and to support local groups. Applications will need to show how they address one or more of the key objectives of the Thrive agenda or the Shared Prosperity Fund.
Gateshead Council's Thrive Agenda
There are five pledges within Gateshead Council's strategy 'Making Gateshead a Place Where Everyone Thrives'.
These are:
- Put people and families at the heart of everything we do
- Tackle inequality so people have a fair chance
- Support our communities to support themselves and each other
- Invest in our economy to provide sustainable opportunities for employment, innovation and growth across the borough
- Work together and fight for a better future for Gateshead
Priorities for the fund
Alongside addressing the aims of the fund, priority will be given to applications that:
- demonstrate how they are addressing the needs of the most vulnerable communities and residents in Gateshead
- help tackle aspects of poverty and the underlying causes of poverty
- help communities do more for themselves
- support the Council's ambitions to address the Climate Change Emergency - more information can be found on our Climate Change pages
Eligibility - Who can apply
- voluntary and community organisations including constituted organisations and registered charities
- social enterprises, subject to the Community Foundation's standard restrictions on funding for the costs of continuing services
In addition
- all organisations must be based, or already working in, Gateshead
- all activities must be delivered in Gateshead only
Organisations with an annual income over £250,000 must outline why the requested funding cannot be sought, in whole or in part, from elsewhere including unrestricted reserves
What can you apply for - Grant amounts
- Grants of up to £10,000 are for individual new projects. The Fund can consider partnership bids involving more than one organisation, where it demonstrates a clear benefit of partnership working
or
- Grants of up to £20,000 for feasibility studies which should consider how future work will be funded from other sources. You must also provide three quotations for the work and the full brief.
All activity must be completed by 31 March 2025
What can you apply for - Core and Capital costs
- ·Core running costs - A contribution to core running costs may be considered, but only where it can be clearly demonstrated to support delivery of the Thrive objectives. The Fund will not support core cost requests from Social Enterprises.
- ·Capital costs - The purchase of small items of equipment will be considered where it supports delivery of the Fund's objectives. Requests for larger capital items will be considered but must be accompanied by a robust business case.
Safeguarding
Applications will only be considered where applicant organisations are able to demonstrate that safeguarding is a priority, and that they have adequate safeguarding policies and procedures in place. Further advice and guidance regarding safeguarding policies and procedures can be found at:

The decision-making panel has approved 28 projects to the value of £315,713.
