Gateshead Council: Social Value Coordinator
The Social Value Coordinator ensures the successful planning, delivery and monitoring of Social Value delivery across Gateshead Council.
This project is achieved by the Social Value Coordinator managing and coordinating the allocation and delivery of social value offers through Council contracts and the Gateshead Exchange web page by matching offers of social value with requests for social value from schools and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises (VCSE's) within Gateshead.
The Social Value Coordinator also records and monitors the delivery of contracted social value by collecting evidence from suppliers and helping them find avenues for delivery if required.
During 2022 to 2025 the Social Value Coordinator Project was able to deliver £999,296.85 worth of social value through our contracts and £3,926.91 through Gateshead Exchange. The social value which has been delivered during this time includes:
- 184.52 Tonnes C02e saved through de-carbonisation by planting 152 trees
- 16 Gateshead residences hired or retained through our contracts
- 110 staff volunteering hours which have been spent on events such as The Cyber Event at St James Park which was held for Gateshead School children, Heworth Grange Career Events, volunteering at Gateshead Foodbank and volunteering to paint outdoor equipment and fences for South Street Primary School
- £5,750.00 has been donated to Gateshead's Community by £3,000 being donated to provide transport to and from the Cyber Event which was held at St James Park, £1,000 donated to Mayors the Charity Event, £2500 to Embells to help provide kitchen equipment to support them with providing their warm spaces and Christmas lunches, Donation of £500 made to The Comfrey Project, £500 donation made to The Northern Counties Horses and Smaller Animals Protection Society and a £500 donation made to Sunlit Path Community Garden Blaydon.
- 1,650 car miles have been driven using low or no emission vehicles in respect of the contracts as a result of a green transport programme and 1723 Car miles saved have been saved as a result of a green transport programme
- 1 Tonne of hard to recycle waste has been diverted from landfill
- £4,800 of resources have been invested into the community in the form of wellbeing initiatives included seated dance classes for care home residents and meaningful work placements for secondary school students
- first aid workshops delivered by the British Red Cross delivering first aid workshops to Gateshead community hubs, VCSEs including Barmoor Hub, Skills 4 Work Gateshead, Connected Voice and Small Gateshead Businesses at Northern Design Centre
- donations including of chocolate boxes for Christmas gifts to Gateshead's looked after young people, sports equipment to Cardinal Hornets basketball club and outdoor equipment to Swalwell Primary School
- equality, diversity and inclusion training to small businesses and consultancies and advice and guidance to help improve equality, diversity and inclusion policies
- educational visits to a bird of prey centre
- 15.5 hours volunteering towards painting fences and helping at foodbanks
During the final year of this project, 2025 to 2026, we hope to deliver more social value within Gateshead. Our aim is to improve the amount of social value we receive via Gateshead Exchange and to improve the promotion of our success stories in order for VCSEs, Residence and council workers to understand what it is we can achieve via social value.
