Code Breakers 2024

Take part in Code Breakers this summer and try to crack the codes found on 10 brand-new posters for 2024.

This year pupils from Fell Dyke Primary School, Lobley Hill Primary School and Portobello Primary School helped design the posters around the theme of active travel. All posters can be found in the local community. How many will you solve?

We need your feedback

If you took part in Code Breakers this year, even if you didn't solve all 10 posters, we would like to know what you thought of the game. Please fill in our quick survey (opens new window). Your feedback will help us improve future Code Breaker games.

How to play

10 coded messages on different poster designs will be placed at locations across Gateshead. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to decode the messages on all 10. You'll need to walk, cycle, scoot or wheel between parks, libraries and other locations to find the posters and crack the codes - no driving allowed!

It's completely free to take part, all you need is a Code Breakers key sheet and a pen or pencil to record your answers. You can pick up a key sheet from your local library, download a sheet (PDF) [499KB] or access a digital version from our website. If it's easier though you can just use a plain sheet of paper.

The key sheet also includes space to record your answers and a map, but it won't show you the exact location of every single poster - finding them all is part of the challenge!

If you prefer to play without paper, smartphone users can use their phone to record answers in a notes app.

Once you've decoded all 10 messages, you can show your answers at any of our libraries and collect your Code Breakers certificate.

How long Code Breakers lasts

Our 2024 Code Breakers game runs from Saturday 20 July until Sunday 1 September. You can play code breakers at any time during these weeks with the ambition to find all 10 posters and crack the codes.

Who can play Code Breakers

Code Breakers is open to anyone (children and adults) and is free to play.
