Spillages or debris on roads
We operate a 24 hour, 365 days a year service to respond to emergency incidents on our highways which would cause a risk to road users, such as:
- clearing up after accidents
- removing dead animals
- dealing with spillages (like oils or fuels)
- dealing with debris (like dropped cargo, steel, sand and broken glass)
If you are aware of a spillage or debris on the highway please report it as soon as possible on 0191 433 3000, providing the location and police log number (if applicable).
You can also report non-urgent cases online.
This type of request will be dealt with as a matter of urgency. If you are calling outside of office hours (Monday to Thursday, 8am to 5.30pm and Friday 8am to 5pm) please select option 1 to report an emergency.
Your phone number would be helpful as our team may require a more precise location (although this is optional).
Spillages on the A1 and A194(M) should be reported to National Highways (opens new window) on 0300 123 5000.
