Dead animal removal

We will remove dead animals found in public places or obstructing the highway. The only exceptions are the A1 and motorways. To report a dead animal in a public place please contact us on 0191 433 3000.

Dead animals on motorways and the A1 should be reported to Highways England on 0300 123 5000.

We use microchip scanners to check for microchips in all domestic animals recovered from the highway in order to notify the owner where possible. For further information on lost dogs, visit our dog warden page.

We do not offer a service to remove farm/hooved animals. These types of animals should be reported to DEFRA. For more information visit

We can also collect dead domestic pets from households within Gateshead free of charge. If you would like to request the removal of a pet please contact us on the number below. We will contact you within 2 working days to arrange a suitable time for collection.

Dead rats, birds and other small animals found in domestic properties and gardens can be disposed of in your household waste bin. Please handle with care and wrap or bag where possible.
