Give your child's old scooter a new life

Scooters at Green Heart

Do you have a scooter like these lying around at home, in a shed or a garage?

Does it need some repairs, or maybe your child has just outgrown it?

If so, please consider donating it to our partners at Green Heart Collective.

They have launched a project in partnership with the council, Sustrans and the scooter manufacturer Micro Scooters to get unused or broken scooters back on the pavements of Gateshead - and in the hands of children who will enjoy them.

As part of our School Streets initiative, the project officer Lou Millington (funded by Sustrans) will be based at the GREEN HEART shop at 231-233 High Street in Gateshead, to work on refurbishing scooters.

The aim is to have these scooters ready to roll in time for schools going back in September.

The project is only for ordinary scooters - Green Heart will not be accepting e-scooters.

Andy Redfern, co-founder of Green Heart Collective, said:"Here at Green Heart Collective, we are passionate about making Gateshead a better place.

"Our primary focus is keeping waste out of landfill/incineration and that is because we want this to be healthy, happy place to be.

"As long time supporters of active travel through great organisations like Slow Ways and Sustrans, we are excited about our summer project to get kids more active in Gateshead, turning scooters destined to be scrapped into some little one's pride and joy."

Micro Scooters will be providing the project with some refurbished scooters and loads of parts for the scooters Lou is fixing.

Councillor John McElroy, cabinet member for the environment and transport, said:

"We are keen to encourage all kinds of active travel in Gateshead. It's good for people's health, and it helps to reduce the number of vehicles on our roads.

"This scooter project is a great example of a council, a charity, a social enterprise and a commercial business all coming together with a common objective, to make a real impact."
