Further investment to improve Gateshead's streets

Environment investment - July 2025

Clean streets, safe public spaces and well maintained local centres are at the heart of proposals being considered to further invest in services to improve Gateshead's local environment.

Feedback from residents indicates that the maintenance of public spaces is a top priority and a well maintained and attractive street scene is crucial for the future success of the borough.

In response to this feedback the Council has developed proposals which will see a significant investment in new jobs and machinery. Over next few weeks 35 additional street scene operatives will be recruited and a range of new equipment purchased to help make a real difference to Gateshead's open spaces and local environment for everyone to enjoy.

Complementing this investment, Gateshead Council will increase communication with residents, highlighting the vital work and showcasing the impact of its growing fleet and machinery. Through more regular and engaging updates, the council aims to inspire collective responsibility and encourage everyone to take pride in where they live.

Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "We know how important these services are for local people and, despite ongoing financial challenges, we are determined to do the best we can to invest and improve our streets and public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

"We can't do this alone and we need everyone in the borough to love where they live. However we will do everything we can and we're fully committed to improving the resources we have in this area both in terms of machinery and staffing."

Alongside these proposals the council also confirmed earlier this year further investment, worth £6.8m would be made in new waste collection vehicles, to improve the reliability of our service, and £7.7m will be invested, over the next five years, in new machinery to improve pot hole repair.
