Gateshead partnership pledges to take action against the causes of poverty

STATEMENT OF INTENT 2025

A new partnership to tackle the root causes of poverty is launching in Gateshead, and organisations and businesses are invited to show their support by signing a pledge.

People of all ages and walks of life can experience poverty. Many families in Gateshead have too few resources, and don't have the security of savings to cushion the impacts of unexpected costs or life events - such as losing a job or having to take time off work to take care of a loved one.

The Gateshead Tackling Poverty Partnership acknowledges that financial hardship can be caused by several issues and is also compounded by other factors such as ill health, lack of choice and control, and systems and structures that further disempowers people and that there needs to be a strategic approach to better support families and residents across the borough.

Together, members from across the public, private and Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sectors in Gateshead will be developing a strategy and action plan in collaboration with communities.

Councillor Gary Haley, deputy leader of Gateshead Council, said: "Tackling poverty is a strategic priority across Gateshead. The link between poverty and people's ability to live in good health and to thrive is something we both understand and agree we need to take action on for our residents.

Poverty is taken into consideration in all aspects of our decision-making and policy development, but we need to develop an action plan that we as a partnership can commit to and continue developing alongside regional and national policies."

An event held by the Gateshead Tackling Poverty Partnership will bring partners together to agree the key areas of focus and to start work on the action plan.
