Field of Remembrance and the planting of the crosses
The Field of Remembrance and the planting of the crosses began Friday 24 October at Gateshead's Saltwell Park. Gateshead is celebrating the honour of hosting the Field of Remembrance for the thirteenth year in a row, the only event of its kind in the whole of Northern England.
This special event is organised by The Royal British Legion and we are honoured to support their efforts once again. Planning takes place throughout the year and we'd like to extend heartfelt thanks to both the Royal British Legion and our incredible Technical Service team, whose dedication makes this event possible.
Additional volunteers joined the effort on Friday morning, including Community Payback Service, volunteers from Nissan and Saltwell Park Grounds Maintenance team.
Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Freda Geddes said:
"It's a profound honour to stand alongside our community in Saltwell Park and help plant crosses in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our country. The Field of Remembrance is a powerful symbol of respect, reflection, and unity, and I'm proud that Gateshead continues to host this important tribute."
The Field of Remembrance is on display just outside of Saltwell Towers, and anyone is welcome to come visit for a quiet moment.
The Dedication Ceremony will take place at the Field of Remembrance on Saturday 1 November 2025 at 10.40am. Everyone is welcome to attend.
