Ferndene Park trials greener wildflower planting approach

A former swimming pool site at Ferndene Park is being transformed into a vibrant wildflower patch, thanks to a collaborative effort between local volunteers and support from Gateshead Council.

Recognising the area's tendency to become boggy, volunteers proposed repurposing the space to encourage biodiversity and enhance the park's natural beauty. The initiative marks a shift toward more sustainable land management practices with the team trialling a herbicide-free method of wildflower planting.

Rather than clearing the ground entirely, the eco-friendly approach involves gently revealing patches of bare soil within the existing grass sward. This technique supports the soil's natural ecosystem, including beneficial microbes and invertebrates and aims to create healthier conditions for wildflowers to thrive year after year.
