Overnight closure required for Gateshead highway flyover

Gateshead Flyover 2025

Further safety checks on the Gateshead Highway flyover will take place tonight (Friday 15 August), following work that began last week.

From 10pm Friday until 6am Saturday, the Park Lane Roundabout and its approach roads will be closed.

The inspection will focus on the concrete edging and the underside of the bridge deck, ensuring the structure remains safe in the run-up to its planned demolition this autumn. Esh Construction will carry out the work on behalf of Gateshead Council.

The council has always checked the integrity of the flyover structure on a regular basis, and it was one of those regular checks which led to the closure in December 2024.

Anneliese Hutchinson, Strategic Director for Economy, Innovation and Growth at Gateshead Council, said: "We began these surveys last week and made great progress. Tomorrow night's work will complete this round of checks, ensuring the area remains safe for everyone.

"The work will be done overnight to minimise disruption, and we're working hard to bring forward the flyover's removal. This is a complex structure, so careful planning with our specialist contractors is vital."
