Big investment to make Gateshead's high-rise homes safer and more secure

Cllr Buckley multi-storey

As part of broader plans to invest over £358m in improving our housing services over the next five years, we've recently approved a spend of £4.6m on brand new safety and security measures for our multi-storey homes, to help make sure our tenants feel safe, supported, and proud of where they live.

Councillor Chris Buckley, Cabinet Member for Housing believes everyone has a right to feel secure their own home:

"The wellbeing of our tenants is a top priority. That's why we're introducing modern technology and services that will not only improve safety, but also make day-to-day living more convenient."

Residents will soon benefit from:

  • two-way direct communication link - linking directly to our 24/7 concierge service, the new units will be installed in each flat, allowing tenants to ask for help, manage visitors, and report issues such as noise, fly-tipping, or anti-social behaviour (ASB), all at the touch of a button
  • 24/7 concierge support - a new dedicated team available to support tenants around the clock
  • high-definition CCTV - brand new cameras in communal areas both inside and outside, helping us to deter ASB and quickly respond to any problems
  • manual call points - handy wall-mounted points around the building where residents can instantly speak to concierge staff if they need help or want to raise a concern
  • digital noticeboards - there will feature general and site-specific information, that can be updated remotely
  • new door entry system - a secure fob system to make sure only residents and their visitors can get in. If a fob is lost or stolen, it can quickly be deactivated and replaced

These upgrades will help make our multi-storey homes safer by preventing unauthorised access, and with a dedicated round-the-clock concierge team available on demand, it will give tenants the confidence that any issues will be dealt with quickly and decisively.

Councillor Chris Buckley, added:

"We want all of our tenants to feel safe and supported in their homes. These new systems will not only give people greater peace of mind, but also make it easier to raise concerns and get help when it's needed. This is a major investment in our communities, and part of a bigger programme of improvements we're making to keep our homes secure, well-managed, and good places to live."

The installation is being carried out by specialist and highly experienced contractor North, who's Managing Director (North), Andrew Foster, added:

"We are proud to be supporting Gateshead Council with this ground-breaking project. The investment in innovative integrated technologies coupled with a wide-ranging programme of sustainability and social value initiatives will support the council with re-shaping communities that are safer, future-proofed and create places that residents are proud to call home."

Work on the installation began in September and will last until 2027, and we're committed to keeping residents updated every step of the way, with the work being carefully planned to keep any disruption to a minimum.

This investment builds on other improvements we are already making, such as new fire doors and external access doors, extensive painting, new kitchen, and bathroom and heating system installations where necessary, all designed to make their multi-storey homes safer, more modern, and more comfortable for everyone.
