Get ready for half term fun with Project: Play

PLAY WEEK 2025

A programme of events celebrating the magic of play is set to take over Gateshead later this month.

Project: Play invites children and their families to explore their creativity and playful side with an activity-packed array of free and low cost events taking place this upcoming half term week from 27 October to 31 October.

The 'festival of play' has been organised with Playful Anywhere CIC, a social enterprise with a mission to make creativity, inventiveness and playfulness accessible to everyone. Free events are being planned across the borough for the week, showcasing Gateshead's rich cultural landscape while promoting grassroots community activities, with organisers hoping it will inspire more people to embrace the power of play.

The programme for Project: Play will include:

  • a 'Playbox' and playful pop ups provided by Playful Anywhere CIC across Gateshead
  • funded play-themed events and workshops at key community venues such as Orbis, Side by Side Arts, Gateway and Gem Arts
  • play themed activities with Gateshead Libraries and Gateshead Family Hubs

"Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism at Gateshead Council, said: "Project Play is more than just a celebration of Gateshead's cultural offer, it is about bringing our communities together to express themselves socially and creatively through the power of play.  Children and their families can access culturally enriching experiences that will spark their curiosity and bring them joy. Each event will also help children to make new friends, develop their confidence, and encourage connections between our communities. By providing a jam-packed programme of free and low-cost activities for our residents, everyone will be able to join in the fun this half-term."

A full schedule of activities will be released shortly and available online, see Gateshead events

The programme is being delivered by the council, in collaboration with local businesses and organisations, made possible with funding from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and the North East Combined Authority. It builds on the council's Creative Spaces strategy by supporting and funding grassroots and community led events, which aims to invest in local culture, animate public spaces, and create more opportunities across the borough for people to connect in meaningful and enjoyable ways.
