Gateshead Council achieved a series of legal victories last week, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to keeping the borough safe, clean and free from illegal waste.
Three successful prosecutions and the issuing of a warrant show that the council will take robust action against those who flout environmental and safety laws.
In one of the cases, Mr Stanley Miller of Ryton, Gateshead, faced court action after repeatedly failing to secure his property, MGM House on Newburn Bridge Road. The dilapidated site had been the source of multiple complaints from the fire service and police due to arson, anti-social behaviour and illegal dumping. Despite receiving both a Community Protection Warning and a Community Protection Notice, Mr Miller took no action.
On 23 September 2025, South Tyneside Magistrates' Court found Mr Miller guilty in his absence and fined him £1,100 with costs of £777, bringing the total to £1,877. Gateshead Council has since secured the property to prevent further risks to residents.
Two of the three successful prosecutions involved individuals from outside Gateshead who attempted to dump waste within the borough.
Trevor Farrell, from Woodhorn Village, Northumberland, illegally disposed of building waste in an abandoned caravan in Claremont Street Carpark, Gateshead. CCTV evidence showed him covering his van's registration plate, and he admitted to the offence.
Mr Farrell was fined £576, ordered to pay £617 in costs, and £162 in compensation, totalling £1,355. Notably, this was not his first offence; he had previously admitted to fly-tipping in Gateshead in November 2024.
Alexandra Reynolds of Stanley was linked to waste dumped at Fell Bank, Birtley. Documentation within the waste identified her as responsible.
Despite being required to attend a Council investigation, she failed to do so. The court found her guilty in her absence, imposing a fine of £220 and costs of £200, totalling £420.
In a separate case, a person who failed to appear in court has had a warrant issued for their arrest, underlining Gateshead Council's zero-tolerance approach to those who ignore legal obligations.
Anneliese Hutchinson, Strategic Director of Economy, Innovation and Growth said:
"Gateshead Council will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or illegal waste dumping.
These court actions and the issuing of a warrant highlight our commitment to keeping our streets safe and our community clean. We are determined to take every necessary action to protect residents and deter future offences."
These prosecutions send a clear message: Gateshead is not a dumping ground for outsiders, and anyone who uses it as one will be held to account.
