Taking a stand against fly-tipping

flytipwheatley

Gateshead continues to take a tough stance against environmental crime as another resident is more than £560 out of pocket for fly-tipping.

Mr Wheatley, was prosecuted for unlawfully depositing waste within the communal bins area of East Hill Road flats, having been caught on CCTV dumping waste in, on top of and around the communal bins. In total nine trips were made from the van to the communal bins leaving the site in an unacceptable state.

Despite having been issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, a penalty fine for an environmental crime, Mr Wheatley did not believe he had done anything wrong and failed to pay the fine.

The court imposed a total penalty of £562, including a £400 fine and £162 in compensation.

Anneliese Hutchinson, Strategic Director of Economy, Innovation and Growth said: "Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence that ruins our environment, costs taxpayers money, and puts public health at risk. We will continue to take action against those who dump waste illegally in our communities or ignore legal requests for cooperation as it is unacceptable.

"This case helps to show the importance of using witness statements alongside other evidence, such as CCTV so I would encourage residents to report any issues they are aware of. If we work together we can tackle fly-tipping and help everyone to love where they live."

Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of fly-tipping. Illegal dumping is a criminal offence that can result in fines and legal action.
