Here we mow!

The new machines, which include seven grass cutters and one tractor, will increase capacity in the short term over the next few weeks and in the long term will improve the reliability of the fleet as older vehicles get replaced.

Grass cutting across Gateshead, on land and public spaces owned by the council, takes place on a three weekly schedule between April and October, although this can be weather dependent.

Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "It's great to see our new machines are now operational. Investing in our fleet is crucial to make sure we can be as efficient as possible and deliver the best services we can for our residents.

"Taking care of our local environment is really important to us and our local communities and that is why we are prioritising our resources to help everyone love where they live. This is an important milestone for our fleet although we have more to come throughout the rest of this year and we look forward to sharing more about the additional investment we are making to improve the environment."

Our grass cutting schedule is minimised in areas with rare or endangered species of flora and fauna to limit the impact on local wildlife.

This is one way we are continuing to invest in our environmental services. Earlier this year we confirmed that we are investing £6.8m in new waste collection vehicles, to improve the reliability of our service, and £7.7m will be invested, over the next five years, in new machinery to improve pot hole repair.
