New research aims to improve support for parents in Gateshead

HDRC PARENTAL SUPPORT PROJECT

Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) Gateshead and colleagues in Children's Services are working on a new project which aims to improve support for parents whose children are taken into local authority care.

The 'Doing Things Differently' project has been co-produced with Her Circle's new research and system change group, 'Her Circle Ascend'. This group consists of women who have experienced complex motherhood and are committed to creating positive change for others.

Her Circle is an organisation which supports women who have experienced, or are at risk of, child removal across the North East. Their vision is to help reduce the number of children being removed from their families while ensuring that the voices of mums are heard so that they can actively influence and shape services, policies and practice that exist to support them.

In addition to co-producing the research with Her Circle Ascend, Gateshead HDRC and Children's Social Care are sponsoring the group throughout the duration of the study, which involves investing in further development and training for the participants.

Councillor Gary Haley, cabinet member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council, said: "We know that when it comes to improving our services, the most valuable insight is from those who have first hand experience of the support offered to them by the council and its partners. We will also be investing in Her Circle as well as in the professional development of colleagues across Children's Services, who will develop research and evaluation skills with support from our HDRC team."

Amy Van Zyl, Chief Executive Officer at Her Circle, said: "This new model of co-investment will see experts by experience have their voices heard and views valued by contributing to a research project that also invests in their personal development. I am honoured that Gateshead Council is the first investor in the group and look forward to seeing how mums who access our services views make a difference to the services that are offered in Gateshead."
