New era for By the River

By the River NEW

The successful By the River bars and restaurants complex is making a welcome return to Gateshead with a new permanent development under the Tyne Bridge.

The re-imagined complex secured planning permission today, and will see the familiar elements of the previous By the River Brew, including a range of food outlets, and with the addition of a single storey events venue building, and the existing bar/restaurant building becoming a cafe/bar/restaurant open all day.

The new development will feed into Gateshead's ambitions for economic growth and regeneration, including the Quays area, Baltic Quarter, the town centre, and Metro Riverside. The site's prominent position also means it's important for the region's regeneration ambitions through the North East Combined Authority.

The existing complex, which operated for five years from 2018 to 2022, will make way for a new collection of buildings - some making use of the structures already on site.

A temporary bar area has operated on the site in recent summers, but not occupying the full footprint.

Councillor Leigh Kirton, cabinet member for economy and communications, said:

"We welcome the return of By the River, with this evolution of the site into a permanent leisure and commercial space.

"We have ambitious regeneration plans for Gateshead and this development will enrich our cultural and leisure offer, and complement the world class arts venues in the quays area - as well as link in with the growing Railway Quarter and our wider regeneration plans."

Rob Cameron, director of By the River, said:

"Having worked closely with the council since first activating the site at Hillgate Quay in 2018, we are pleased to be able to secure planning for the site's future.

"Initially brought to life for the Great Exhibition of the North on a temporary basis, the benefits of permanency will bring many more visitors to Gateshead and create a large number of full time jobs for residents.

"The site is truly unique in its positioning and we believe the scheme will benefit and complement the wider ambitions for Gateshead Quays which are hugely exciting.

"Over the years, By the River has won accolades from near and far and we aim to build on that with this new heritage.

"To be able to create something with a true legacy is a privilege and we look forward to moving forward with the project."
