New equipment joins fleet to help keep Gateshead clean
The latest additions to the fleet are 14 specialist sweeping machines designed to clear heavy detritus that has gathered on difficult terrain over many years. Unlike a standard handheld sweeping brush, these brushes are body-worn and distribute weight across the operator for easier handling and less strain.
The new brushes are both electric and petrol operated, giving the team flexibility to cover a range of conditions. The electric models bring the added benefit of zero emissions and lower noise levels, supporting Gateshead's wider sustainability goals while improving the working environment for staff and residents.
In terms of performance, the new machines are a major step forward. They can sweep in a fraction of the time it would take a manual team, meaning areas that once required an hour's hard labour can now be cleared much more quickly. Their heavy-duty capability also means they can reach places that have previously been hard to maintain.
The machines are being deployed across Gateshead, with two in each local area, one dedicated to Saltwell Park, and another assigned to the Environmental Improvement Team. This distribution will ensure consistent coverage across the borough while providing extra support to one of Gateshead's most visited parks.
Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:
"This new equipment will make a real difference in keeping Gateshead clean and welcoming. By investing in modern solutions, we're not only helping our staff work more efficiently, but also ensuring our streets, parks and public spaces are cared for to a higher standard. Residents will notice the difference."
The rollout of the new mechanical brushes is part of Gateshead Council's ongoing commitment to maintaining a clean and tidy environment for all who live, work and visit the borough.
