Baby Week comes to Gateshead
Families with young children are invited to celebrate Gateshead's first Baby Week with a range of events and activities that support the best start in life.
Baby Week is a charity which showcases the vital role of local health and wellbeing services in supporting children to have the best start in life across the UK.
Their annual campaign, which this year takes place between 14 and 21 November, also aims to raise awareness about the importance of early childhood development.
Gateshead's Baby Week campaign will take place across the borough's nine Family Hubs, which offer health and wellbeing advice to every member of the family, all year round.
In addition, Gateshead Libraries will be hosting events including Rhyme Time and Story Time, and national online advice sessions will be available to Gateshead health staff.
The free events and activities for Baby Week include:
- Baby Time - enjoy creative play with toys and sensory materials, as well as songs and rhymes that support language and emotional development
- Sensory Babies - relax to gentle music, soft textures, low lights and interactive play to stimulate senses in a calm environment
- Messy Time - explore, create, and get messy in a designated space
Drop-in health and wellbeing clinics will also be available throughout the week to provide advice, including on infant feeding, growth and speech development.
The programme shines a light on the Gateshead Family Hubs offer, which includes feeding and prenatal nutrition, mental health support and early learning, all while allowing parents and carers to connect with others in their community. Similarly, Gateshead Libraries offer a fantastic range of community events and groups for children of all ages.
Councillor Catherine Donovan, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
"In Gateshead, we're committed to giving every child the best start in life, which is why we're proud to be supporting Baby Week and showcasing our amazing family hubs and activities at Gateshead libraries.
The first few years are crucial to a child's development, which is why we have worked hard to establish such a strong offer for parents, carers and their children at our family hubs across the borough. Access to health and wellbeing services is so important, and we'd encourage all families to find out about the array of activities, advice and support available at their nearest library or family hub during Baby Week and beyond."
