Community food festival to bring crowds to Saltwell Park this September

SALTWELL PARK 2025

A food festival centred around celebrating community is coming to Saltwell Park this September.

Funded by the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund, the North East Combined Authority and the Royal Horticultural Society, the event will showcase the power of food to connect people across cultures, improve our wellbeing, enhance our environment, and support sustainable local economies.

Gateshead Food Partnership's flagship event. 'From Gardens to Gatherings', will be a chance to eat good food together around banquet-style tables, share recipes, learn new skills and celebrate food heritage and a diversity of tastes in Gateshead. Around 25 different organisations across Gateshead Food Partnership will be showcasing their work towards food system change in Gateshead.

Free for the whole family, come along on Sunday 21 September from 11am until 4pm to enjoy:

  • live music
  • live cooking demonstrations
  • entertainment including performances and short talks
  • creative family activities
  • hands on workshops

And most importantly, a delicious range of foods, which will be available at low cost to all attendees.

The event is also supported by Gateshead College with students from a range of courses including catering, event management, photography and digital journalism getting involved in the build-up and on the day of the event.

Councillor Maria Hall, cabinet member for Localities, Communities and Volunteering, said:

"We all have memories of a meal that's brought us closer together to family, friends or our wider communities. The way food connects us with others across generations is incredibly special.

This event goes beyond what we normally see from a food festival to put our communities at the heart of the celebration, bringing people from across the borough together to enjoy a day of delicious food, music, creativity and laughter.

As the first of its kind for Gateshead, we hope as many people as possible can join us at Saltwell Park. I'd like to thank everyone involved in making this happen, and I can't wait to see the vision come to life with the help of Gateshead College students."

Tom Bradley, Assistant Principal at Gateshead College said:

"It's fantastic that our students have the chance to be part of this new event, which promises to be a real community celebration.

The event is another valuable opportunity for them to apply the skills they learn at college into a live project and contribute to something that brings people together."

No booking is required. To find out more about the event, visit Gardens to Gatherings: A celebration of community food in Gateshead.
