Commitment to tackle hate crime reinforced at Panel held in Gateshead

PCC PANEL 2025

This week, we're shining a light on hate crime: building understanding, promoting inclusion, and encouraging everyone to take a stand against hate speech in our communities.

Yesterday (Tuesday 14 October) the Northumbria Police and Crime Panel meeting, held at Gateshead Civic Centre, focused on tackling hate crime and improving community cohesion.

The Panel's discussions focused on top priorities for the area and were particularly timely during Hate Crime Awareness Week (11 - 18 October) and following the harrowing attack on a synagogue in Manchester earlier this month.

The latest Panel report shows a significant rise in hate crime in Northumbria. Here in Gateshead, there has been a 23.2% increase in reported hate crimes year-on-year. This is a stark reminder that we must continue working together to challenge prejudice and strengthen trust between communities.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Chair of the Northumbria Police and Crime Panel, said: "We're incredibly proud of how our communities support each other here in Gateshead - but there's more work to be done to tackle the rising reports of Hate Crime in our area. It's so important to see the support from Panel members of a new migrant myth-busting resource as part of this, launching later this week alongside colleagues from Cleveland and Durham PCCs and the North East Migration Partnership."

Residents can find out more about the importance of Hate Crime at drop-in events held at Gateshead Libraries this Friday (17 October) and visit the Bewicks Café to see a photography exhibition celebrating our diverse communities in Gateshead.
