New strategy to restore and enhance nature - have your say
A major new strategy to help restore and enhance the natural environment is set to go before Gateshead councillors.
The Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) outlines clear priorities and potential actions to restore nature and reverse biodiversity decline in the South of Tyne and Wear area. It also identifies where conservation efforts could have the greatest impact.
Led by Gateshead Council and supported by South Tyneside Council and Sunderland City Council, the strategy will be considered by Cabinet at their meeting on 18th November with a recommendation to launch a full public consultation.
Councillor John McElroy, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:
"This strategy is a vital part of our efforts to enhance the natural environment - but its success depends on support from the whole community.
"We want to tap into the local knowledge of residents, community group, landowners and farmers.
"This plan is about restoring habitats, supporting the recovery of species and creating more nature-rich spaces for everyone.
"We're proud to be leading on the preparation of the strategy and look forward to receiving feedback from stakeholders across Gateshead, South Tyneside, and Sunderland as the consultation progresses."
If approved by all three councils, the consultation will launch on Thursday 27 November and run for seven weeks. Minor revisions to the draft may be made before the consultation begins.
The consultation will invite people to help shape the final strategy by sharing their views on the proposed priorities and potential measures.
