Celebrating Gateshead's volunteers

VolunteerWeek1

Volunteers' Week is an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers. This year's celebration runs from  Monday 2 to Sunday 8 June.

This Volunteers' Week, we are taking the opportunity to shine a light on the incredible contributions made by volunteers across our borough. We will be sharing stories to celebrate the dedication, passion and impact of our volunteer community and to give thanks for the time and energy they generously give.

We will also be promoting a wide range of environmental volunteering opportunities currently available in Gateshead. By showcasing roles across different services, whether it's environmental clean-ups or helping at community events - we hope to inspire more people to get involved in ways that suit their skills and interests.

Councillor McElroy, Cabinet member for Environment and Transport said:

"Every day, amazing volunteers across Gateshead give their time, energy and care to support neighbours, protect our environment and strengthen our community. This week is our opportunity to say thank you and to shine a light on how much they do. I encourage anyone who has a few hours to get involved and meet new people, learn new things and make a difference to your local environment"

Throughout the week, residents will be able to engage with our team at a series of pop-up events and community sessions. These events will offer information, support, and a friendly introduction to environmental volunteering. They are a great chance for people to explore how they can take their first steps or build on their existing involvement.

We encourage residents to attend any of the following events, there's no need to book a place - just turn up and volunteer.

  • Wednesday 4 June, 10am - 1pm - Environmental Volunteering Pop up and Community Litter pick - Leam Lane Family Hub
  • Thursday 5 June, 10am - 1pm - Environmental Volunteering Pop up and Community Litter pick - Gateshead Civic Centre
  • Thursday 5 June, 10am - 2pm - Gateshead Countryside Volunteers Taster Day - Swalwell Visitor Centre
  • Thursday 5 June, 10am - 2pm - Chopwell Litter pick - Chopwell Park (near to the pump track)

We are also committed to communicating the wider value of volunteering, not just for the individuals supported, but for the volunteers themselves. From learning new skills to improving wellbeing and making lasting connections, volunteering brings many personal and social benefits.

Above all, this week is about encouraging a sense of pride in Gateshead. By coming together to volunteer, our residents are helping to create stronger, more connected communities.
