Catering Services and Building Cleaning teams win at national awards

APSE award winners

The council's Catering Services and Building Cleaning teams have both been crowned winners at a national performance awards.

Held on Thursday 7th December, the Association for Public Service Excellence's (APSE) Performance Networks Awards 2023 recognised the very best in local government frontline services across the UK.

What is particularly special about these awards is that they are given based on data - in each of the nominated categories, winners were selected based on a range of performance indicators that were benchmarked against other local councils.

Our Catering Services team won in their category of 'Best Performer in Catering Services' out of 15 nominees. This team provides services for primary, secondary, special and dedicated all age schools. They achieved their award based on free and paid meal uptake, nutrient-based standards, cost-based indicators and the number of meals served.

Our Building Cleaning team, who provide cleaning of education and non-education buildings across Gateshead, also won the 'Best Performer for Building Cleaning' award. This was in recognition of the number of square metres cleaned, cost indicators and staff turnover they have achieved over the past year.

Combined, these two areas have over 800 frontline employees working throughout our schools, public buildings and beyond, and these awards are testament to their hard work. A huge well done to both teams.

Commenting on the event, Mo Baines, APSE Chief Executive said: "I am thrilled to see so many local authorities using APSE's benchmarking to innovate, develop their services, and achieve excellence. This is especially impressive at a time when council finances are facing unprecedented pressures. Congratulations to the winners and finalists - you are a credit to your communities."

APSE Performance Networks is the largest voluntary public sector benchmarking service across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Used by over 200 local authorities, it leads the way in local government benchmarking.
