Success for Gateshead Parks

Gateshead Council's commitment to green spaces and parks has been recognised with four parks - Chase Park in Whickham, Derwent Walk Country Park, Felling Park and Saltwell Park - all receiving Green Flag Awards.
Chase Park and Saltwell Park also achieved the Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management and promotion of their historic features - the only two sites in the North East to do so.
Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said "Both our staff and volunteer groups work incredibly hard to care for, maintain and improve our green spaces so we are delighted that their passion, hard work and commitment have been recognised in this way.
"We know our parks are hugely appreciated by local residents and visitors to the borough and offer many benefits including helping to improve our health and wellbeing and offering spaces to bring people together. We have Love Parks week and the school holidays starting soon which are a great opportunity to visit on of our local parks and see how amazing they are."
Paul Todd MBE, Keep Britain Tidy's Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: "Congratulations to everyone involved in Gateshead who have worked tirelessly to ensure that it achieves the high standards required for the Green Flag Award. Quality parks and green spaces make the country a healthier place to live and work in, and a stronger place in which to invest. Crucially, these four parks in Gateshead offer vital green spaces for communities in the borough to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis it is a free and safe space for families to socialise. It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space."
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
