Is your rented home winter-proof?
Living in a home with broken heating, dampness, or draughty windows and doors can make winter a miserable time.
If you've asked your private landlord for repairs and they haven't fixed the problem, please get in touch with our Private Sector Housing Team.
We will visit you at home, then contact your landlord to make sure that essential repairs are carried out. We have a range of housing and environmental-health powers to make sure that rented housing is safe and healthy to live in.
To get ready for winter, make sure you have:
- heating that works and that you can programme to go on and off when you need it to
- radiator valves and a thermostat so that you can control the temperature in different rooms.
- loft insulation
- windows and doors that fit closely and don't allow heat loss
- extraction fans in bathroom and kitchen to keep on top of condensation when you're not able to open windows
- rainwater pipes and gutters that prevent water splashing excessively on walls and a roof that doesn't let water in. Dampness can make it even more difficult to keep your home warm
