COVID-19: Two years on

"A heartfelt thank you"

Two years ago this week all our lives changed. Gateshead's first case of COVID-19 was recorded on 12 March 2020, bringing with it the challenge of our lives.

Two years like no other in living memory. So many people have played their part, going above and beyond to manage the pandemic and protect our families and friends.

Two years of courage, commitment and creativity from people throughout the NHS, the Council, our partners and communities.

Primary care staff transformed the way they work, with triage and remote consultations as well as face-to-face appointments to help patients while protecting us all from the risk of infection.

Hospital staff from doctors and nurses to cleaners and porters have worked through immense pressure to maintain and adapt normal services at the same time as caring for large numbers of COVID-19 patients.

Teams from across Gateshead Council have played a vital role in keeping our communities moving and our people safe. Community centres and leisure facilities were transformed into food distribution hubs, testing facilities and vaccine centres, with staff taking on brand new roles. People from all walks of life volunteered their time to help.

Perhaps most dramatically, our vaccine teams have provided an incredible 186,000 jabs in less than 18 months.

Two years on, it's a good moment to reflect and say a heartfelt thank you. We hope the worst of the pandemic is behind us, but we know you are still working incredibly hard for everyone in Gateshead no matter what challenges lie ahead.

For everything you are doing for Gateshead, thank you.

Dr Mark Dornan, Chair of NHS Newcastle Gateshead Integrated Care Board

Alice Wiseman, Director of Public Health, Gateshead Council

Yvonne Ormston MBE, Chief Executive of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust
