How to re-register

To show that the biological parents have married

Only one parent needs to come to the register office if both parents have filled in and signed the form, and they present a certified copy of their marriage certificate.

Either parent can then attend the register office with the completed form and a copy of the marriage certificate.

The child's surname can be changed as part of the re-registration process.

Download a re-registration form to show that the parents have married (opens new window) (form LA1)

To add the biological father's details

If the parents are not married to each other, both parents should come to the register office in person.

The child's surname can be changed as part of the re-registration process.

Download a re-registration form to add the fathers details (opens new window) (form GRO 185)

The request for a re-registration could be referred to the Registrar General for authorisation if:

  • the marriage took place outside of England or Wales
  • a statutory declaration is presented in the absence of a parent
  • a court order is presented

If you would like a new birth certificate you can buy one at the time of re-registration. View our fees and charges.
