Parking alongside a dropped kerb
Parking alongside a dropped footway can cause considerable inconvenience to third parties. It can also put vulnerable road users at greater risk of being involved in a road traffic accident. Rule 243 of the Highway Code says that drivers should NOT stop or park, amongst other places, at the following locations:
- where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles
- in front of an entrance to a property
- where you would obstruct cyclists' use of cycle facilities... except when forced to do so by stationary traffic
With a few exceptions, the law now allows the Council to issue Penalty Charge Notices to vehicles parked next to dropped kerbs without the need for there to be any signs or lines on the road.
There are basically two types of dropped kerbs: those for pedestrians and those for vehicles to access off-street areas. We are currently devising a policy for dealing with parking at dropped kerbs at the entrance to properties.
