New Mayor for Gateshead

Councillor Freda Geddes has been elected as Gateshead's new Mayor at the annual Council meeting.
Elected as a councillor for the Ryton, Crookhill and Stella Ward in 2018 the new Mayor has lived in Gateshead all her life and throughout her working career taught in different Gateshead schools. She has also undertaken many volunteer roles.
Supported by her husband, Councillor Alex Geddes who will act as the Mayor's Consort, Councillor Geddes has nominated Age UK Gateshead as her chosen charity.
Councillor Geddes said: "It is an absolute honour to be elected as Mayor of the Borough where I have lived all of my life. I'm proud to be able to represent Gateshead and I look forward to getting and about across the borough to meet all of the people who make our local communities fantastic places to live.
"Whatever our political persuasion, there is a passion and desire to improve the lives of the people of Gateshead. So, I wish to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Mayor of Gateshead. It's humbling, challenging and a great honour."
Councillor Sharron Potts, who represents the Wardley and Leam Lane ward, has been elected to serve as Deputy Mayor.
At the meeting Council noted changes to the Cabinet portfolios for the upcoming year and agreed appointments to committees of the council, including Chairs and Vice-Chairs, and to some outside bodies.
