Getting out and about

If you are supporting a child or young person with a disability, you can find information about travelling on trains, planes, cars, buses and coaches, taxis and minicabs and about wheelchairs on the Government's website.

Blue Badge

The Blue Badge Scheme makes it easier for disabled people to park near to places they want to go to. Find out more about eligibility for a Blue Badge and make an application.

Concessionary travel

If your child is aged between 5 and 16 they may be eligible for an All Day Concessionary Travel Pass. This will allow them to travel free on public transport all day every day. Find out more about concessionary travel and how to apply.

The council has produced a booklet about alternative/discounted means of travel for learners in and around Gateshead:

National Railcards

National Railcards can give you up to 1/3 off the price of a train ticket so for people who use the trains often, it can mean a huge saving.

Disabled Persons Railcard

If you are disabled and find rail travel difficult, this gives you discounted fares. If you have hearing or sight loss you may also qualify. You could also qualify if you have epilepsy or receive a benefit related to a disability. In addition to a discount for yourself, another person who travels with you can also get the same discount.

You can buy these online from the website.
