Share your views on Gateshead Town Centre
A survey has been launched to gather views from residents, businesses and organisations on how they view the retail area of Gateshead Town Centre, with aim of improving perceptions and increasing footfall.
The survey will ask for views on:
- How proud residents and businesses are of the town centre
- How safe the town centre is for visitors
- What can be done to make the town centre feel safer
This opportunity to share your thoughts on the area follows the appointment of a Town Centre Manager to bring more people to the town centre and to make every visitor feel welcome.
A Town Centre Manager for Gateshead Council was recruited to the role in January following funding provided by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) to enhance towns across the nation.
So far, their work has included connecting local businesses and increasing community spirit through organised volunteering and stakeholder engagement.
As part of this, the council has supported initiatives such as The Big Help Out in June, which saw over 90 hours of volunteering activity dedicated to improving the environment of the retail hub. This included the painting of fences and creation of planters, working with the Gateshead Recovery Partnership and local businesses to bring communities together.
Through this engagement with community organisations, residents and businesses, it has been identified that tackling anti-social behaviour is a priority for changing perceptions of the town centre.
By responding to the survey, you will directly input into the vision to use short term interventions to change the public's perception of the town.
Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism at Gateshead Council, said: "It's brilliant to see the work of our Town Centre Manager having such an impact on bringing our communities together just months into the new role.
"However, we recognise that we have a long way to go in bringing people to the town centre, with anti-social behaviour being identified as one of the main concerns for our residents.
"We aim to use the responses of our new survey to improve perceptions and misconceptions of the town centre, ensuring it can be a place where people can live, work and play safely while creating an environment for business, entertainment and leisure offers to thrive."
