Put the kids first - avoid family conflict this Christmas
We're calling on parents to consider the impact of relationship conflict on children and young people this Christmas.
Most conflict between parents and carers can be avoided by good communication and forward planning. Our Early Help Service has the following advice:
- Focus on the children - The holidays should be one of the most special times of year for families and arguments can make children feel upset, confused and unsafe
- If separated, be clear on what time your children will spend with each parent or carer - Plan in advance and stick to the agreement, involving the child in making arrangements where appropriate
- Don't bring up old disagreements - Christmas can be a time of reflection for many, but try to stay calm and seek compromise if previous disagreements are brought up
- Be mindful of your alcohol intake - For adults, alcohol is often part of the holiday celebrations, but excessive drinking can often lead to conflict - especially if you are feeling angry or upset
- Take some time out - even if it is for a 30-minute walk to reflect and clear your head between the festivities.
Our Early Help Service offers a range of options to support family relationships. Contact 0191 433 5129 (Monday-Friday) or parenting@gateshead.gov.uk for more details.
