Who are we and what do we do  

Community Safety is part of Gateshead Council. We are based at the Civic Centre and we work in collaboration with other partners to reduce crime and disorder through tackling issues such as: 

  • anti-social behaviour 
  • drug and alcohol misuse 
  • re-offending 
  • the fear of crime

We collect information from you in a number of ways: 

  • when you contact us 
  • by partner organisations 
  • through the Criminal Justice System  

We also collect information from the Council's website which uses  cookies.

Why we need your information 

Our purpose for collecting your personal data is: 

  • to reduce crime and disorder through tackling issues such as anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol misuse, re-offending and the fear of crime 
  •  for the fulfilment of statutory obligations 

 The lawful basis for our processing is:

  • Legal obligation to which the data controller is subject.  Obligations in legalisation such as:
    • Crime and Disorder Act 1998 
    • Police and Justice Act 2006 
    • Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 
    • Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 
    • Domestic Abuse Act 2021 
    • Domestic Violence  
    • Crime and Victims Act 2004 
  • Task in the Public interest  
  • Performance of a contract to which data subject is party 

Our lawful basis for processing of sensitive personal data is: 

  • Employment, social security and social protection (if authorised by law) 

  • Reasons of substantial public interest (with a basis in law) 

Who your information can be shared with 

Our Corporate privacy notice. sets out the general types of information sharing that the Council carries out to fulfil statutory obligations, legal requirements and service delivery. Community Safety can share your information with: 

  • The emergency services  
  • The Community Safety Partnership  
  • The Home Office  
  • Education services 
  • Counter-Terrorism Policing North East 
  • The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria 

Our lawful basis for this sharing is legal obligation and public interest and your consent is not required.  

If we wish to share your information with other council services or third parties for purposes outside of those listed above we will ask for your permission. 

How long we will keep your information 

We keep your information for as long as we need in order to provide the services to you. This will differ depending on the services you receive. We may also need to keep your information in accordance with legal or other obligations. Where we have no need to keep your data it will be securely destroyed. We have Record of Processing Activity (a requirement under the GDPR) which sets out the specific retention periods applicable in different circumstances. Where your information is held 

Your data is held within systems that are both UK and non-UK based, but where non-UK based, the processors are subject to the standard contractual clauses or appropriate transfer mechanisms for international transfers.
