A Common Thread: A retrospective exhibition by Clare Satow
Experience the captivating creations of local artist Clare Satow in a stunning new exhibition at Gateshead Central Library.
The Gallery at Gateshead Central Library is the temporary home to a new exhibition showcasing the work of local artist Clare Satow. 'A Common Thread', which is open to the public until Saturday 7 October during normal library hours, displays Satow's unique portrayal of life in the North East using an array of techniques and materials.
Featuring stitching, illustration, screen printing, textiles and more, A Common Thread presents a hugely varied selection of Satow's work. The artist's passion for illustrated manuscripts, Celtic art as well the influence of 15 years spent growing up in India can all be seen in her bold use of colour, creative style and distinct calligraphy. Going on to live for many years in Bill Quay, Gateshead, Satow's vibrant style is fused with recognisable local scenes, including depictions of the bridges over the Tyne and the arrival of the Angel of the North.
Having worked with a multitude of organisations like the Bearpark Artists Co-op in Durham, Bill Quay Farm as well as other schools, artists and art groups, Satow's work also gives a deep sense of community, especially within the North East. Several of these collaborations can be viewed in the Gallery along with quotes from artists and others on the great impact that Satow has had on the community.
Artist Kate Hancock said: "Satow's friends and family have uncovered each of these pieces and allowed this unmissable collection to be shown to the public. As Satow now lives with dementia, this exhibition allows her work to be acknowledged and for people to experience her creative expression, historical relevance and undeniable levels of skill and talent."
Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: "I would encourage everyone to visit this remarkable exhibition. It is fantastic to view some familiar scenes interpreted in a fresh light and for the chance to celebrate one of our talented local people. I am delighted to have such an exciting cultural opportunity like this in Gateshead for everyone to enjoy".
A Common Thread runs until Saturday 7 October and is open during normal library opening hours, Monday and Thursday 9am-7pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. Tel: 0191 433 8420.
