Goats
Sally Matthews' seven life-sized Goats were installed on a bank in 1992, below the Queen Elizabeth II bridge.
They enjoy a goat-friendly setting, climbing and foraging amongst the wild vegetation and stone outcrops and ledges remaining from demolished industrial buildings.
The sculptures consist of welded metal armatures fleshed out with scrap materials and textured aggregate cement.
The models for the Goats were all 'locals' drawn from life at Bill Quay Community Farm, where visitors could also watch the artist working on the sculptures.
An earlier herd of Goats by Sally Matthews was a popular success at the 1990 Gateshead Garden Festival.
