Learning and Skills - Youth Skills

About

Learning and Skills provide bespoke courses for pupils ages 13 - 16 in English, Maths, Employment Skills. In addition to this young people will have access to our step into work programmes in Care, Retail, Business Admin.

Learners will also have access to community learning (where appropriate) arts and crafts programmes.

The course is designed to help young people grow in confidence, communication, and other employment skills, to help them find an area of work they might be interested in.

The teaching team and Learning and Skills and can support and change delivery style based on learner needs. The provision in on floor 3 and is accessible by lift.  

Suitable ages ranges 

Learning and Skills can accept children from ages 13 to 18 years old. 

Qualifications available

Children can gain the following qualifications:

• Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 English and Maths
• Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 certificates and awards in Employability Skills

About the teaching

All training is carried out at Gateshead Interchange, West Street Gateshead, NE8 1HH. 

Students can attend from anywhere in the Gateshead borough. 

Teaching is delivered typically with a ratio between 1 teacher to 8 students to 1 teacher to 11 students.  

The provision is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Students can attend upto 12 to 25 hours per week. 

Transport is not provided. 

The length of programme can be adapted to what is required for each student.

Cost for sessions are as follows:

• £18 per hour

How to apply for a place for a student

Referral by making contact for initial discussion via email. 

Contact with schools 

Once a student has began their training, attendance/non-attendance will be communicated at regular intervals via Teams, email or phone. 

They provide feedback either weekly if on a short programme or every 4 weeks if on a longer programme.

Insurance 

Learning and Skills have current public liability cover and insurance certificates are displayed. 

They also have current employee liability cover. 

Safeguarding 

Learning and Skills have a compliant safeguarding policy in place which is reviewed yearly. 

Pre-employment checks are carried out in line with guidance. 

The provision has a designated safeguarding lead and there is regular training for all staff at the provision. 

Health and safety 

Learning and Skills have a health and safety policy in place with a designated member of staff trained to Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) standard. 

They have full risk assessment for the premises and carry out regular fire drills which are recorded. 

They have all required first aid equipment in place in line with RIDDOR procedures (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013). 

Data protection

Learning and Skills have a data retention policy in place which is reviewed regularly. Staff also receive regular training. 

They have a privacy notice in place that explains how they collect, use and protect people's personal data.
