Apply for council housing

How to apply

1. Join the rental register

To apply for council housing, you need to be registered with the Tyne and Wear Homes housing scheme.

  • Anyone over 16 years old can register. Applicants under 18 will have their needs assessed by a specialist team.

  • You will need to provide information including your national insurance number and details of previous tenancies.

There are two forms to complete. Start with the 'Register your household' form.

This form will only take a couple of minutes and will give you a registration number. You will need to make a note of this as well as whatever memorable date you input.

Then go to "social housing" to be registered on our waiting list. This form will take about ten minutes to complete. There are a lot of questions but not all will be relevant to you.

The form will ask for email addresses for everyone. Enter "N/A" against anyone who does not have an email.

Once you have completed the second form, it automatically comes to us. We will send you a letter, listing what you have to do next and what documentation you need to include with your application. This will include a form of ID and references for any tenancies that you have held in the last five years.

2. Search for and bid on homes

Once you are registered with us you can start bidding on the properties that we advertise on the website every week. You need to go to "property search" to do this, and then select the "choice-based lettings" option. If you need something very quickly, choose the "available now" option as well.

3. What happens next

If you are successful, you will be contacted and given the opportunity to view the property.

If you are at the top of the list for more than one of the properties you bid for, you will be given 24 hours to decide if any are suitable. If you cannot be contacted, a decision will be made by a lettings officer.

You will not be contacted if your bid has not been successful.

You can also log in to your Tyne and Wear Homes account to check the position of any bids you placed on advertised properties.

Due to the demand for housing, homes are allocated according to need.

Other ways to find a home
