Komatsu youth exchange programme 2017-18

This is an exciting opportunity to visit Japan!

In 1991 Gateshead twinned with Komatsu City in Japan. Since then, there has been a successful youth exchange scheme. This involves students from Gateshead and Komatsu hosting each other in their homes. The 2017 visit took place on 14 to 28 July. The expected dates for the outward visit are likely to be 14 to 29 July 2018.

Purpose and commitment

We started the programme to meet the town twinning commitment of promoting international understanding among young people. This is an opportunity for personal and social growth and education.

The commitment is just under two years and will involve participants hosting a two week visit by a Japanese partner and a two week visit to Japan the following year. Participants will need to:

  • attend regular preparation meetings,
  • attend activities relating to the exchange
  • plan fundraising activities.

Dates of visits and cost

There is no direct cost for participating in the programme but you will be expected to take part in fundraising activities.

How does the programme work?

Successful applicants are matched with a partner from Komatsu City and provide a home-stay and take part in a range of activities throughout the visit. In 2018 they will stay with their partner's home in Komatsu City. Applicants will be an ambassador of Gateshead during the visit. The exchange will involve:

  • visiting schools
  • sharing cultural activities
  • sports
  • performances as well as a range of educational and cultural learning.
