There is a power under Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 to confer the title of Honorary Aldermen or Alderwomen on persons who have rendered eminent service to the Council as past members of the Council but who are not then members of the Council.
Council protocol states that any former councillors who meet a set of criteria, may be offered the opportunity to become an Alderman or Alderwoman of the Council.
Former councillors who have served at least ten years or held a senior position within the Council (for example Mayor of Gateshead) will be offered the honour.
