Roads outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital have been resurfaced to improve driving conditions and help prevent potholes from developing in the future.
Queen Elizabeth Avenue is a key route serving the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, used daily by patients, visitors, NHS staff and emergency vehicles. Maintaining this section of road is particularly important to help ensure safe and reliable access to vital healthcare services.
The scheme forms part of a wider programme of highway improvements being delivered across Gateshead. Alongside planned resurfacing schemes, we have also been using the specialist Pothole Pro machine to repair roads more quickly and effectively. Since the arrival of the Pothole Pro in October 2025, the machine has resurfaced approximately 13,250 square metres of road across the borough.
Councillor Graham Keating, Cabinet Member for Roads and Transport at Gateshead Council, said: "Maintaining and improving our roads is a top priority, and this scheme on Queen Elizabeth Avenue is another example of the investment we're making in our highway network. Innovative equipment like the Pothole Pro machine helps us to repair roads more effectively and prevent potholes from developing, improving journeys for residents and making our roads safer for everyone."
Further resurfacing works are due to take place on Station Road in Rowlands Gill between 3 and 9 August. To allow the work to be carried out safely, the road will be closed each evening between 8pm and 5am, resulting in temporary changes to local bus services. Revised routes and replacement transport arrangements will be in place to help maintain essential links for nearby communities, including Rowlands Gill, Winlaton Mill, Highfield and Hookergate. Councillor Keating continued: "The resurfacing work is being carried out overnight to minimise disruption. We appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to make road improvements across the borough, helping to ensure roads remain safe and reliable for residents, businesses and visitors."
