Appeal to find a foster home for young sibling group

1 July 2026

We are appealing for loving stable foster homes for Gateshead children to give them a chance to thrive and remain in their local community.

Gateshead's fostering service is currently searching for homes for over 30 children and like many councils across the country, they are facing a significant shortage of foster carers, for the number of children coming into care.

At the centre of this appeal is a sibling group: a little girl aged three and her bothers, aged four and five.

Currently separated in short-term foster care, the children need a long-term foster home where all three can stay together in a caring family environment.

They are all loving and playful children who like exploring, learning and being with other children. They need a foster carer who can offer stability, routine, encouragement, warmth and understanding to help them to continue to develop and grow in confidence.

Despite months of searching, there is currently no suitable foster placement available for these children in Gateshead, meaning they could be at risk of being moved away from their school, friends and familiar surroundings.

Helen Fergusson, Director for Children's Services and Lifelong Learning, said:

"Every child deserves a good start in life, and we know that a stable, loving family home gives them the best possible chance to develop and thrive.

"We have amazing foster carers in Gateshead who show unwavering commitment to some of the most vulnerable children in our community changing their lives for the better.

"Sadly however, we simply don't have enough carers for the number of children who need them, so we urgently need people to come forward and find out more. You could make a huge difference to a child's future and w

e will offer you all the support you need, along with a network of existing experienced foster carers ready and willing to share their priceless knowledge and support you every step of the way.

"If you feel you could make a difference to a child, get in touch. You could be taking the first step on a life-changing journey."
