Computer House is down - the flyover is next
The demolition programme for the Gateshead Highway flyover moved on to an exciting new phase this week, with a high-reach demolition excavator from Thompsons of Prudhoe pulling down the top levels of the Computer House building.
Long reach demolition excavators then removed the remainder of the structure which stands next to the flyover.
The machinery has small jets to throw up a mist of water when operating, to minimise the amount of dust from the demolition process.
Once the upper storeys of the building had been demolished, the smaller excavators for the lower storeys were also used to break up the concrete and steel structure on the ground.

Work on this phase of demolition began on Monday morning, 30 March, and was largely complete by Tuesday evening, 31 March.
Now the excavators are working through the rubble created, and the waste is being taken off site in HGV dumper trucks.
Thompsons will recycle as much material as possible, to be used for other construction projects, such as foundations for roads and new buildings.
Meanwhile Construct-IT and Thompsons are working with main contractor BAM to prepare the flyover structure for the first phase of demolition around the Sunderland Road bus lane.
