Gateshead Great British Spring Clean is a success

GBSC26

Bringing people together, improving local communities and over 800 bags of rubbish collected are just some of the results of this year's Great British Spring Clean in Gateshead, helping everyone to love where they live.

The Great British Spring Clean is a national, annual campaign run by Keep Britain Tidy which calls on everyone to do their bit to help their local environment by pledging to collect one bag of litter or more.

Once again, we have been sharing what we do as your local council to care for and improve the environment around you, educate residents on resources available and hosted litter-picks around the borough.

Across two weeks our environmental services teams were joined by 162 volunteers from the community and over 200 council staff volunteers, for our litter-picking events.

Visiting 12 locations, they collected 805 bags of rubbish, and a wide variety of large and small fly tipped items including a fridge, motorbikes, mattresses, glass bottles, and car parts. The environmental teams also carried out maintenance such as grass cutting, trimming and removal of graffiti.

Samantha Allcott, Strategic Director for Housing, Environment and Healthy Communities at Gateshead Council said:

"Our environmental services work hard all year around to help keep Gateshead tidy dealing with issues such as littering, fly tipping and graffiti.

"The Great British Spring Clean is a great way for those teams to work alongside our amazing volunteers who give up their time to support and help clean up the local area.

"We recognise the impact of clean, litter-free streets on our residents' well-being and pride in their borough. Therefore, we all have a role to play in making Gateshead cleaner, greener, and more welcoming."
