Library creative design space to be upgraded with Arts Everywhere Fund
A creative space for technology, craft and design at Gateshead Central Library is set to be upgraded with over £70,000 of government funding.
A total of 130 organisations across the country are today marking the first projects receiving cash from the government's Arts Everywhere Fund. Funding for these venues will help provide welcoming, affordable spaces for communities to visit, come together and celebrate what makes their local area special.
The £12million funding for the North East is administered and delivered by Arts Council England on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. This includes the Libraries Improvement Fund, which has allocated a share of £657,000 to three library services in the region.
Gateshead Council's library service has been awarded £71,794 of this fund to upgrade MakerPlace, a space for digital-assisted craft and design at Central Library used by residents, schools and community groups. The upgrades hope to attract new users by offering new facilities like soundproof pods and recording equipment for podcasts, as well as VR headsets. The award will also improve the functionality of the space with the installation of room dividers to make the room more flexible for both community and commercial organisations.
Rachel Ridley, Library Service Manager at Gateshead Council, said:
"We're so pleased to be one of three library services in the North East receiving a funding boost to upgrade our facilities for local communities.
"MakerPlace is a space that's really valued by our residents, and it's especially loved by schools and young people who take part in workshops and activities. We worked with them on what they would like to see improved in the space and are delighted that their ideas of a podcasting studio and VR headsets will become a reality thanks to this funding."
Rebecca Ball, Area Director, North, Arts Council England said:
"Our museums, libraries and arts organisations have the power to change lives, they give us access to new worlds, teach us about our heritage and give us new perspectives on life.
"I'm so pleased that we'll be supporting so many of our cultural organisations in the North with this capital investment, which will ensure that they can continue to deliver incredible arts and culture to their communities."
