Leaving bins out in back lanes and on streets after they have been emptied can lead to several issues, including causing obstructions, attracting vermin, creating potential fire hazards and making areas look untidy. Returning bins promptly after collection helps reduce these problems and improves the appearance of local communities. It also reduces the risk of bins being stolen.
To help tackle the issue, Gateshead Council's environmental antisocial behaviour team will be visiting areas where bins are regularly left out. They will check back lanes and streets the day after waste collections, talk to residents about the importance of putting bins away and take enforcement action where necessary.
Gateshead Council are also asking residents to avoid parking vehicles in locations which will restrict access for their bin crews as this can result in bins not being collected. As collections start at 7.30am residents are being asked to think about parking vehicles in a suitable location the night before, if needed, to ensure bins can be emptied from 7.30am on collection day. Enforcement action may be taken if a vehicle regularly causes an obstruction.
Councillor Garry Thompson, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "Our teams work very hard to keep Gateshead clean and tidy. However, leaving bins out after collection day can cause several issues for residents and communities, which is unacceptable.
That's why our team will be visiting areas where we know this is an issue so we can prevent this happening in the future and help everyone to love where they live."

Top tips for bin collections
do not overload your bin. If a bin is too heavy or the lid cannot fully close, it may not be emptied.
do not leave waste on top of or beside your bin. Excess waste will not be collected and could be reported as fly-tipping.
avoid blocking access to your street or back lane. If collection vehicles cannot gain access, bins cannot be emptied.
return your bin to your property on the day it is emptied to avoid causing problems for neighbours and the wider community.
do not put waste in other people's bins
