The Heart of Care in Gateshead

Across Gateshead our children's residential homes play a vital role in supporting some of the borough's most vulnerable young people. Our homes provide far more than a place to stay, they offer stability, affection, safety, and the chance for young people to grow into confident, independent adults.

Gateshead has five children's residential care homes across Gateshead and our amazing staff work 365 days a year supporting young people aged 12-18.

We also have a residential home which provides short break care for disabled children who live at home with their families.

Each home is supported by compassionate and skilled professionals who understand the importance of building trusting relationships and providing consistent, nurturing care and a safe and supportive environment which encourages young people to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives. From supporting our young people through life's challenges to celebrating their achievements and helping them build the skills they need from adulthood our care home staff are there when our young people need them.

Many of the children and young people have experienced difficult early life experiences and trauma, and our children's homes provide a sense of belonging, love and reassurance from people who genuinely care about their future. The young people who live in our homes laugh, learn, dream and grow together.

All our children's homes have been recognised for their quality of care by being rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

Ofsted said, "In Gateshead, children live in the home for a long time, which provides them with stability. The staff and managers have a thorough understanding of each child's background, the trauma that they have faced and the impact this has on them. Staff provide children with highly personalised care, a sense of belonging and strive to develop trusting relationships with each child."

For those living in the homes, the difference this support makes is life changing. Young people have commented that they can talk openly to staff about any worries they may have and speak fondly of memories made with staff from holidays and enjoyable experiences.

Gateshead's children's homes continue to be places where young people can thrive. Through patience, encouragement, and unwavering commitment, staff help create brighter futures, one young person at a time. And for the whole community, they are a reminder that when children are supported, understood, and believed in, extraordinary things can happen.
