We have successfully obtained a court injunction against a Gateshead resident following a prolonged pattern of serious anti-social behaviour that caused significant distress to neighbours, council staff and the wider community.
The injunction, which was granted by the County Court at Gateshead, prohibits Adam Watson from using or threatening violence towards our staff, contractors or agents, residents of Coronation Road in, Sunniside, Gateshead, and anyone lawfully present in the area. It also forbids him from engaging in behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, nuisance or annoyance, including racist or homophobic abuse, shouting and swearing, excessive noise, and causing or attempting to cause criminal damage.
The Court injunction also enables police officers to arrest Mr Watson if they have reasonable grounds to suspect he has breached any of these conditions.
Our application was supported by evidence detailing a significant and sustained pattern of unacceptable behaviour. This included repeated racist and homophobic abuse, threats of violence, aggressive and intimidating conduct towards neighbours and housing staff, allegations of criminal damage, and incidents of serious disorder linked to the property.
The evidence also outlined incidents in which Mr Watson physically pushed a member of our housing staff, threatened violence, chased an individual with a dog that was later identified as an XL Bully, which was removed by Northumbria Police, and was involved in disturbances requiring a substantial emergency services response.
Councillor Gavin Brierley, Cabinet Member for Housing at Gateshead Council, said:
"Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and in their community, and no one should have to tolerate the kind of behaviour experienced by residents and our staff in this case. We will always take robust action against those whose actions cause fear, intimidation and harm to others.
"This injunction demonstrates our commitment to protecting our communities and supporting victims of anti-social behaviour. We will continue to work closely with Northumbria Police and our partners to ensure that decisive action is taken where individuals repeatedly refuse to change their behaviour."
The injunction will remain in force until 6 May 2027, with any breach potentially resulting in arrest and further court action, including proceedings for contempt of court, which could lead to seizure of assets, a fine or imprisonment. Any breach will also be taken extremely seriously by the Council, and may lead to further tenancy enforcement action, including legal action seeking possession of the property and the loss of tenancy.
