Children from across Gateshead have helped put their mark on our environmental fleet after coming up with a series of fun and imaginative names for grass cutters and a tractor.
The naming competition, launched last year, invited young residents to suggest names for the council's environmental machinery. After receiving lots of creative entries, eight winning names were selected and are now proudly displayed on the vehicles as they help keep Gateshead looking its best.
The winning names are:
Grasstalavista
Albie Mowing
Hay-Way the Lads
Choptimus Prime
Lawn & Order
The Trim Reaper
Mow Deere
Colin the Cutterpillar
The competition winners were recently recognised for their creativity, each receiving a certificate and shopping voucher. The child who came up with the winning tractor name, Hay-Way the Lads, also received a toy tractor generously donated by John Deere.
Councillor Fiona Pearce, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
"We were delighted by the fantastic response to the competition and the creativity shown by children across Gateshead. These names have brought a real sense of fun and personality to our environmental fleet.
Our teams work hard throughout the year to keep our parks, green spaces and neighbourhoods looking their best, and these new names are a brilliant way for young people to connect with the work that we do in their local communities."
Residents are being encouraged to keep an eye out for the newly named machines as they travel around the borough throughout the grass-cutting season.
The names can be found on the back of the grass cutters, giving residents a chance to take part in their own spotting challenge while out and about in Gateshead.
The council's environmental team carries out grass cutting across the borough on a 15-day schedule, helping to maintain parks, open spaces, roadside verges and other green areas for residents to enjoy.
